Faces of the Campaign:
The People Behind Our Water, Our Land

Celeste Burns and Alex Johnson

It’s early Saturday afternoon and Celeste Burns and Alex Johnson have already had a busy day with their three young girls, Sophia, 5, Beatrice, 3, and Phoebe, 1. They’ve been shopping at the Farmer’s Market, attended art classes, and worked on the compost pile in their yard.

Both Celeste and Alex are committed to land conservation issues. Celeste has been involved with land management for more than a decade, working as a forestry consultant and a liaison between land owners and members of the forest industry in the Triangle and eastern North Carolina. Alex graduated from North Carolina State with a degree in forest management and now works for the City of Durham.

Celeste is a member of TLC’s Board of Directors and has been involved with the organization for eight years. Because of their busy lives with their girls, the couple does not have extra time to pursue their own interests; and as a one income family, they carefully monitor their spending. But when TLC approached them to donate to the Our Water, Our Land campaign, they agreed.

“Alex and I don’t make a lot of money,” Celeste said. “When we do contribute to charity organizations, we want to keep it local and for something that matters to us.”

Celeste thinks the Our Water, Our Land campaign is important because it will allow TLC to compete on a larger scale with developers. “They won’t be just shaking bushes,” she said, “They’ll be out there with their wallets saying, ‘We’re going to stop this from becoming a golf course.’”
