Our Water, Our Land Places: White Pines
Using the Land Opportunity Fund, TLC acquired 86 acres near its White
Pines Nature Preserve in Chatham County in May 2007. TLC is exploring
various conservation options for the future management of this property,
including possibly adding it to the preserve, which is TLC's most
biologically significant property. TLC is negotiating with neighboring
landowners to conserve other properties and enlarge the White Pines
forestland reservoir that is critical for wildlife and water quality.
TLC used campaign funds to expand the trail system at White Pines as
well. The 288-acre preserve now boasts three miles of hiking trails that
offer beautiful views of the forest and the Deep and Rocky Rivers. In
addition to providing a peaceful place for people to hike, the preserve
provides habitat for federally endangered fish and plant species and
supports several stands of white pines, a tree that is normally found in
the cooler mountain region of North Carolina.
