TLC has turned to its past to look to the future, bringing a rising land trust movement star back to his conservation birthplace.

The TLC Board in December 2003 hired Kevin Brice as the new executive director. Kevin began work on January 21, 2004.

Kevin, who left TLC two years ago to start the southeast program for Land Trust Alliance, was chosen after an exhaustive nationwide search. He replaces interim executive director D.G. Martin, who took over for longtime TLC leader Kate Dixon in July 2003.

“Kevin was a clear choice because he brings to TLC not only his past experience and familiarity with the organization, but also the tremendous knowledge he has gained over the past two years working with land trusts throughout the country,” said Liz Rooks, president of the TLC Board and chair of the Board committee that conducted the search.

“We look forward to Kevin bringing new ideas and best practices from other land trusts to continue to build on TLC’s solid foundation.”

Rooks said Kevin was selected from a field of more than 60 applicants from across the country. “The challenge for us was determining which person was the best fit for TLC,” she said.

Kevin worked for TLC from 1997 to 2001, including two years as associate director. He also served as stewardship coordinator, land protection specialist, and director of land protection. He began serving TLC as a volunteer in 1996.

“Triangle Land Conservancy is one of the country’s finest and most effective conservation organizations, and I am extremely excited to be joining the staff as executive director,” Kevin said.

A native of Chicago, Kevin graduated in 1989 from Yale University where he was a running back and four-year starter on the football team. He has lived in the Triangle since 1994, and currently resides in Cary.

In his two years with Land Trust Alliance, a national organization that provides local and regional land trusts with training and resources to build their organizational capacity, Kevin worked with many land trusts and learned new approaches to private land conservation.

“Kevin Brice accomplished so much in a short amount of time with Land Trust Alliance,” said Mary Pope M. Hutson, Land Trust Alliance vice president. "He worked with land trusts to identify their greatest challenges and goals and provide training and tools needed for the effective and lasting protection of the Southeast's imperiled areas.”
