TLC Executive Director's MessageMembers Drive TLC's SuccessAugust 2006 In June, TLC members elected a slate of new directors, as well as board officers, to the Board of Directors (read full story). With members having the opportunity to vote via mail-in ballots in addition to the usual protocol of attending the annual member gathering and voting there, TLC saw the highest voter response in the organization’s 23-year history. And several TLC members took the opportunity to write additional feedback on their mail-in ballots about other conservation issues. This kind of member participation is very encouraging to me, and it is very important to TLC. I welcome your thoughts and opinions, and I don’t want you to be bashful in expressing them! Since the very beginning, TLC’s success depended upon its members. You make the organization, and your involvement is its lifeblood. TLC members not only supported the organization financially in the early years, they ran it! While this has changed as TLC hired staff and protected more acres, TLC never ventured far from its volunteer roots. Hundreds of our members still volunteer every year in a variety of important ways. From board and committee members to site stewards and trail crews, from pro bono attorneys to office mail parties, TLC members log thousands of volunteer hours to help conserve the Triangle’s best places. If TLC members did not donate dollars and time today, TLC would be out of business tomorrow. I want to involve more of TLC’s members in our conservation work, and I want to grow our membership because TLC’s history shows that more members mean more acres protected. We have recently brought on Membership Coordinator Marisa Bryant to do this (click here to learn more about her!). Marisa (pronounced ma reeŽ sa) will be reaching out to you to learn more about why you support TLC and asking your ideas for increasing our member ranks. If you can’t wait for Marisa to contact you for your thoughts, feel free to get in touch with her at 833-3662 ext. 111. As someone who began at TLC as a volunteer, I personally know how valuable volunteers are to our success. TLC converts your support—be it time or money—into clean water, clean air and beautiful places. Thank you for all that you do for local conservation. Kevin Brice, TLC Executive Director
