TLC Executive Director's MessageTLC Collaborates for Conservation SuccessesNovember 2006 Triangle Land Conservancy—your local land trust—is celebrating another stellar year. TLC has protected more than 1,000 acres thus far in 2006, and the properties represent some of the Triangle’s most beautiful places. All told, TLC has protected nearly 9,000 acres in Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Orange and Wake counties. These conservation successes are the result of three vital ingredients: your generous support; a group of dedicated, creative staff and volunteers; and conservation partners. The third ingredient has become more prominent in recent years, as evidenced by the great land acquisition success that Haw River Assembly and TLC achieved in August on the Haw near Bynum. (Read more.) This is our latest example of partnering with another organization to achieve a common conservation goal. TLC members are well aware of other examples of effective collaboration. A TLC partnership with Duke University in 2003 created the 1,000-acre Lower Haw River State Natural Area in Chatham County. And in June of this year, TLC worked alongside community groups, private citizens and four local governments to help protect important property along New Hope Creek. (Read more.) Effective collaboration becomes even more powerful when it matches the grassroots strength of nonprofit conservation organizations with the resources of local government. TLC and the Eno River Association collaborated with Durham County and Orange County in 2001 to create the Little River Regional Park, a 391-acre treasure that straddles the Orange/Durham county line. If you have not visited the park yet, treat yourself with a trip to see the fall colors. When it comes to achieving TLC’s ambitious conservation goals, partnerships demonstrate that there truly is strength in numbers. Combine this with your continued support and the creativity of TLC’s staff and volunteers, and we have a recipe for successful local conservation. Kevin Brice, TLC Executive Director
