Meet our InternsLike many non-profit organizations, TLC has a team of interns who provide valuable skills and knowledge to help us achieve our goals. We are fortunate to have five remarkable interns assisting us this summer. From developing assessments and grant writing to classifying natural communities and clearing trails, our interns have had a busy summer dedicated to saving the places we love.
Trent Stanforth, Mary Lovell Hall, Volunteer of the Year Jessie Allen, and Hannah Berg. Hannah Berg, Graduate Student in City and Regional Planning at UNC Chapel Hill, has focused her work on creating a wikisite about working lands resources, helping with grant writing and researching innovative ways for Land Trusts to support local sustainable agriculture Daniel Bursuck, Graduate Student in City and Regional Planning at UNC Chapel Hill, has been developing a Geographic Information System (GIS) based conservation assessment of eastern Wake County and Johnston County. This model will be used in on-going conservation planning and land protection efforts. Mary Lovell Hall will graduate from North Carolina State University next spring with a degree in Natural Resources Ecosystem Assessment. She has been working with Jessie Allen, TLC volunteer of the year, classifying natural communities and compiling baseline documentation reports for several TLC-owned properties. This work will help the stewardship staff develop sound management plans with an eye towards enhancing natural community health. Both Trent Stanforth, a senior majoring in Natural Resources at North Carolina State University, and Ross Turnmire, a senior majoring in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at North Carolina State University, have been helping Land Manager Walt Tysinger this summer. They have been working on trail construction and maintenance, restoration of the Irvin Farm, general upkeep and maintenance of TLC nature preserves, and habitat enhancement, including invasive species removal and forest stewardship.
