Different path brings Aime Mitchell to TLC

Aime Mitchell

From TLC News, May 2007

A native of Houston, Texas, Aime Mitchell became familiar with North Carolina's lush green mountains during nine summers when she attended Camp Greystone near Tuxedo, North Carolina.  She participated in all of the camp's watersports, including sailing and whitewater canoeing.  An accomplished canoeist, Aime braved the challenging whitewater of the Chattooga and Nantahala rivers.  She returned to Greystone as a counselor after her freshman year in college and still stays in touch with fellow campers.  “I loved the landscape and the people at Greystone,” she says.

Aime graduated from Furman University in 1995, where she majored in Health and Exercise Science and played softball.  Her love of sports and her extroverted personality led her on an interesting career path, first as a Physical Education Teacher and Coach for K-12 at St. John’s School in Houston.

She then returned to the Greenville/Spartanburg, SC area, where she had attended Furman, and was introduced to the nonprofit world while working for the Southern Conference, an NCAA Division I Athletic conference.  As a public affairs assistant, Aime worked on media and public outreach projects for the conference.  She then returned to the North Carolina mountains, where she worked most recently as the Assistant Director of Athletic Marketing for Western Carolina University of Cullowhee.

Although Aime’s career had been athletics-oriented, she says she “recently decided that I wanted to forge a different path” and began exploring other career opportunities in the Raleigh area.  When she learned about an opening at TLC, she was immediately intrigued by the idea of working for an organization with a conservation focus.

“Since I grew up in a big city where there’s not a lot of green space, the concept of working for an organization that works to preserve green space was really appealing.”  Aime joined the TLC development team in March 2007 and immediately knew that she had picked the right team.  “We have good energy and work well as a team," she says.  "It’s great to work with people who are passionate about what they do.  And it’s nice to know that your work has a positive effect on your surroundings and the place where you live.”

As development coordinator, Aime manages the donor database, processes gifts and will soon help coordinate special events.  She is particularly excited about drawing on her experience managing students and interns and will be organizing more volunteer activities for the development department.  In her free time, Aime enjoys cooking and photography.
