Background
I was born, raised and educated in New England, earning a B.A. in English from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, in 1988. I came to the Triangle in August 1991 to
attend the Master’s program at UNC’s School of Journalism, with a focus on public relations (and the environment). I worked in the Communications Office
of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in RTP for three years before coming to TLC. I also volunteered for six years as the writer, editor,
designer and publisher of Footnotes, the newsletter of the NC Chapter of Sierra Club. My environmental ethic grew from a love of outdoor recreation as a kid,
particularly playing in rivers and streams. When I came to the Triangle in 1991, I thought this area had the opportunity to learn from the growth problems suffered
in the Northeast and to avoid those problems. With TLC, I have a chance to impact that issue directly.
My favorite TLC property is McIver
Landing because...
...it provides canoe access to the Deep River, a hidden jewel in the Triangle largely untouched by development. Put in anywhere on the Deep and within five minutes
the sounds of civilization slip away and generally don’t re-emerge until a couple hours later when you get to your take-out; along the way you’ll see
green heron and kingfisher and wood duck and probably chase a big old blue heron all the way down the river and maybe even catch sight of a beaver or otter.
