Dianne Bertsch

As a neighbor of TLC’s Johnston Mill Nature Preserve, Dianne Bertsch enjoys the benefits of conservation every time she goes for a walk. “I’m usually in Johnston Mill two or three times a week. They’re not making land like this anymore!” Dianne jokes. She joined TLC after hearing a presentation in her neighborhood. Like many of her neighbors, Dianne was very supportive of TLC’s protection of Johnston Mill in the late ‘90s.

Originally from Warsaw, Ind., Dianne graduated from Hanover College in Indiana then earned an MS in Library Science from the University of Michigan. She lived in Kalamazoo, Mich., where she worked as a reference librarian before work pulled her now ex-husband to the Triangle in 1988, along with Dianne and their then 7 year-old son, Jordan. Dianne’s first job in the Triangle was as a librarian at Carolina Friends School in Orange County.

Now Dianne lends her strong organizational skills to volunteer roles for several local organizations, including TLC, the United Church of Chapel Hill, the Stoneridge-Sedgefield Swim Club, and Carolina Friends School. She has also become a frequent participant in TLC member events and outings. “I really enjoy meeting other TLC members,” Dianne said. “They all seem so down to earth!”

Recently, Dianne has agreed to take on a new volunteer role. She will be TLC’s representative on the board of Earth Share North Carolina, a statewide nonprofit that helps businesses, communities, and individuals support environmental groups important to them through workplace giving. TLC is the single largest beneficiary of Earth Share NC funding (average about $30,000 a year), in large part because the many government institutions in the area offer TLC (through Earth Share NC) as an option in their workplace giving campaigns.
