Julia Elsee

River Society member and 18-year TLC member Julia Elsee has lived in Smithfield for almost 50 years. Originally from Winston-Salem, Julia moved to the Triangle when she married her late husband Walter. Julia attended Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia, where she earned a degree in psychology. She then went to the University of Denver for three things: “To find a husband, to learn to ski, and to get a Master’s degree in social work.” She accomplished the latter two, and then moved to Raleigh where she lived for six years. She worked in a series of welfare/family services positions before marrying Walter and having her two children, Allison and Jeff, and adopting Walter’s daughter, Margaret.

Julia has long been an active member of her community. Since the 1980s, she has been involved with the North Carolina Council of Churches and advocating for better conditions for migrant workers. She is also an active member of People of Faith Against the Death Penalty and Democracy Now. Both Julia and Walter served in leadership roles at Johnston Community College (JCC), he as a Trustee and she as a board member, donor, and solicitor for the JCC Foundation. Julia is an avid bridge player and is very interested in politics.

Julia is a charter member of the Trial and Error Garden Club, but jokes that it’s now called the “Travel and Eat Club.” She first remembers hearing of TLC when her garden club made a visit to TLC’s Flower Hill nature preserve. She also really enjoyed a hike that TLC volunteer Ginger Travis led for the club at Johnston Mill Nature Preserve. The development of a much-loved piece of land has also contributed to Julia’s interest in TLC’s work. During her childhood, Julia’s family had a farm outside of Winston-Salem, which she says was beautiful and split right in half by the Yadkin River. She has been dismayed at how much the landscape of that area has changed due to development and wishes that she had known about conservation options years ago.
