Roz and Ken Winter

High school sweethearts from Raleigh, Roz & Ken Winter escaped the “high-intensity urban life” when they bought a 90-acre farmstead south of Siler City in 1996. (They donated a conservation easement to TLC in 2002.)

Ken and Roz are in their element at Rocking Horse Farm.

Whether caring for their animals (miniature donkeys, llamas, horses, and a mule, among others), restoring native vegetation around the pond or sitting on the front porch welcoming the purple martins home, they revel in their closeness to nature.

“At night the creatures take over,” Ken says, “the deer, the raccoons, the owls. We run it during the day and they run it at night. It’s a lot of fun that way.”
