Donated to TLC in 1991; transferred to the state for
inclusion in Umstead State Park in 1995. |
| Description |
Located on the southeastern border of Umstead State Park,
this 13-acre parcel encompasses the floodplain and footslope along Richland Creek. The
heavily wooded bottomland forest supports a variety of wildlife. It connects Umstead State
Park to NC State University's Schenck Forest, providing a crucial wildlife corridor within
the Raleigh city limits. The Loblolly Trail, a popular Raleigh greenway, follows the creek
through Schenck Forest past Richland Lake to the park. The state accepted the land for
Umstead State Park in 1997, after a 20-month tussle involving a proposed road project, the
so-called "Duraleigh Connector." |
