State of Open Space 2002
Since TLC’s release of the first State of Open Space in 2000, the Triangle has protected 6,069 acres of open space, bringing the region’s total inventory of open space to 155,693 acres
(as of 2002). Despite this progress, many of the institutions that play critical roles in protecting open space – including local governments, land trusts, and non-profits – are not reaching their own goals or the goals set forth in the Million Acre Initiative. Find more details on the region’s protected land, on local conservation initiatives, and on ways in which the Triangle can be more successful in their conservation efforts in the full report, which can be ordered or downloaded below.
Authored by former TLC Associate Director Lorelei
Costa and Planning Fellow Andrea Petersen, with the help of the SOS
2002 Steering Committee, State of Open Space 2002:
- Examines land use changes in the Triangle region – including Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Orange, and Wake counties,
- Inventories land that has been protected,
- Reviews and assesses recent initiatives to protect open space, and
- Recommends ways in which the region can protect more land effectively.
