State of Open Space 2000

Between 1987 and 1997, suburban development consumed 190,500 acres of Triangle forest and farmland, tens of thousands of acres more than the 146,068 acres of open space ever protected in the six Triangle counties.

That's just one of the findings presented in State of Open Space 2000: The Status of the Triangle's Green Infrastructure, a report published by the Triangle Land Conservancy.

The report takes a comprehensive look at open space protection in the Triangle, including:

  • examining the transformation of the Triangle's landscape;
  • inventorying land that has been protected;
  • cataloging initiatives by governments and nonprofit organizations to protect additional land;
  • assessing the State of Open Space in the Triangle.

Moving beyond assessment, the report calls for a Triangle GreenPrint—a bold regional vision that will provide guidance about what land to protect and how to protect it. The report also recommends that more land conservationists be hired in the Triangle to meet the demand for land protection.

"As we continue to grow, the need for a detailed, comprehensive open space acquisition plan becomes even more critical. A proactive approach is essential and I applaud and join in the initiatives of the Triangle Land Conservancy," said Smedes York, one of several prominent Triangle citizens who have endorsed State of Open Space 2000.

State of Open Space 2000 was authored by TLC Executive Director Kate Dixon, NCSU Forestry Professor George Hess and Landscape Architect Mary Woltz. It is the first of what will be biennial reports on open space from Triangle Land Conservancy.
