August 14, 2007
Dear TLC Members and Friends,
On a sultry August day, Jonas
paused from plowing the field and brushed the red dirt off his dungarees.
He trudged over to a shade tree to rest for a while and eat a hard-boiled egg
and a tomato from the garden. "Sure is hot," he thought. Scratching
a chigger bite, he paused in mid-chew and stared at the drooping leaves of the
old oak swaying weakly in the breeze. He felt weary from the heat and
vaguely bored. "Guess it's that old ennui again," he thought. "Seems
like nothing exciting ever happens around here." Suddenly, the droning of
cicadas was overpowered by a piercing yell: "Woo hoo!" A dust cloud
boiled up over the dirt road. The earth shuddered as a horse and rider
thundered toward the farmer. It was Clem the Courier. A
shower of fine road dirt enshrouded Jonas as Clem dismounted. "I come as
quick as I could!" he said excitedly. Grammar was not Clem's strong suit.
He pulled a beat-up metal box out of his saddlebag and opened the lid. The
box dinged like a bell and the inside of the lid glowed. Jonas had never
seen anything like it before. "Where'd you get that?" he asked. "The
snake oil salesman," Clem replied. "He called it a Lap-Top. But
that's not what's important. Look what happened when I turned it on!
It just appeared....something rare and beautiful...something called E-News!"
We hope you enjoy this issue of
TLC E-News. Recycle! If you know someone who would enjoy reading this newsletter,
please forward it to them.

2007
Ride for the Land a Wheel-Spinning Success
Even though this year's Ride for
the Land fell smack in the middle of the Tour de France, 125 devoted TLC
supporters and cyclists pulled themselves away from the tube long enough to join
TLC for our flatter, gentler bike tour of the Deep River region. Thank you
to all of the cyclists and volunteers for their support and enthusiasm.

Food Lion Shop & Share
Program
- Every time a TLC-registered MVP customer shops at Food Lion, a portion of
the total purchase goes to TLC. If you have an MVP card, you can
register it online at www.foodlion.com
or by calling 704-633-8250 x 3810. To register online, go to the Food
Lion website, click on Lion Shop and Share on the left side of the home page
and then click Register MVP cards. Follow the prompts to select TLC.
You will be asked to enter your 12-digit MVP card number and your name and phone number.
iGive.com is an
online shopping portal where you can specify that a portion of your online
purchases be donated to TLC. Visit
www.iGive.com, type "Triangle Land Conservancy" into the keyword search
box, and register. You can shop at more than 680 online stores through
iGive.
Goodsearch.com is a
search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to
the charities its users designate. You use it just like any search
engine and it's powered by Yahoo! Go to
www.goodsearch.com and enter Triangle Land Conservancy as the charity
you want to support. If 500 people search four times a day, they could
raise about $7,300 in a year without spending a dime. Be sure to
spread the word.
From now through October 12,
anyone who opens a new SunTrust Personal or Business Checking
account, accepts a new SunTrust Visa Check Card, and makes any purchase with
it by November 15, 2007, can choose for SunTrust to donate $100 to
their favorite nonprofit organization or receive a $50 gift card
to keep for their own cause. If you plan to open a checking account
between now and October 12, 2007, we encourage you to consider becoming
eligible for SunTrust’s My Cause promotion and request that they donate $100
in your name to TLC. Visit

Land Trust Day
Raises Nearly $7,000 for TLC
Land Trust Day 2007 was a great
success, with 11 businesses participating with percent days or donations.
Thirteen volunteers helped out at membership drives at Triangle area Great
Outdoor Provision Company stores. Thanks to our partner stores and
hardworking volunteers, 32 new members joined TLC on June 2nd, donating $1,786
to the organization. Nine businesses (in 15 locations) donated a
percentage of June 2nd sales to TLC. All told, the
participating businesses raised $5,000. Thank you to these businesses for
their tremendous efforts. Special recognition goes to volunteers
Karen and Joe Bearden who signed up eight new members and Anne Stoddard
who signed up six. Six of the participating businesses were on Ninth
Street in Durham, so special recognition also goes to Robin Barth for
recruiting most of the Ninth Street businesses. Click

Three TLC Preserves Chosen for NC Birding Trail
The North
Carolina Birding Trail is a cooperative effort to create a network of
birding sites around the state that are bird and birder-friendly.
Three TLC preserves — Johnston Mill Nature Preserve, White Pines Preserve
and Swift Creek Bluffs — were chosen to be included among more
than 100 Piedmont sites. The preserves were nominated for their
diversity of year-round and migratory birds and trail systems that provide
easy access to the general public. Learn more at the TLC
website.
After years of study, the North Carolina Environmental
Management Commission has proposed a package of rules to reduce pollution in
Jordan Lake. The public is invited to comment on the proposal until
September 14, 2007. Visit

information.
