1. Conservation Makes Waves on the Deep River
TLC continues
its ongoing partnership with the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation to
protect conservation lands along the nationally significant Deep River. In July,
the State purchased a
75-acre tract of land in Chatham County that is
adjacent to 870 previously conserved acres known as the Justice Lands, bringing
this conservation assemblage to a total of 945 acres.
TLC facilitated the Powell tract purchase for the state.
Together, this land could form the first
node for the Deep River State Trail, a newly authorized state parks unit.

of our members, volunteers and friends, and we invite you to participate.
Responses from this survey will help us increase awareness of TLC's work in
the community and help us better understand the interests of our members. Even if you are not currently a TLC
member, we would appreciate your input. The survey should take
approximately 3-5 minutes. Click this link to be

4. TLC Outings a Great Way to Take A Child Outside
Want to do something positive for the environment? Take a child outside! If you are a parent looking for a good family outing, consider signing up for one of TLC's fall outings. In particular, consider registering for one of the outings during Take A Child Outside Week (September 24-30). The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is overseeing this national initiative which is designed to help break down obstacles that keep children from exploring the natural world. TLC and other conservation organizations are participating in this initiative as well. To register for the TLC outings click here. And visit the Take A Child Outside website.

TLC Nature Quiz
Back by popular demand, TLC's nature quiz is poised to overtake Sudoku as the mind-twister of the moment. Why, you ask? Well, "quiz"
is much easier to spell for one thing. You know the rules....first person
to e-mail the correct answer to ida@tlc-nc.org
gets an ultra-cool TLC cap, although we're sorry to report that we're fresh out
of the brown corduroy caps of yesteryear. OK, here's the deal. Below
is a nature limerick. See if you can fill in the missing final word.
Got it? Send us your email answer!
While floating by the Deep River Diner,
Where the food could really not be finer,
A paddler spied a minnow
Much smaller than his big toe,
And said: "By gum, it's a Cape Fear ______!"
Hint: TLC has worked with partners to protect 2,700 acres in the Deep
River region, helping to protect this rare species and many other creatures native to
the region.
