1. Bonds on Ballots:  Raleigh Parks & Recreation Bond and Wake County Open Space Bond on October 9

The city of Raleigh and Wake County are putting conservation related bonds to their voters tomorrow.  Raleigh proposes an $88.6 million bond issue for parks and greenways, which includes  a proposal to complete a greenway from Falls Dam to Johnston County that will run through TLC's Mark's Creek priority area. Learn more at www.raleighnc.gov/parksbond.   Wake County proposes a $50 million bond issue for open space.  The county has spent more than $10 million from two past open space bond issues to conserve land in the Mark's Creek area through its partnership with TLC and The Trust for Public Land in the Mark's Creek Rural Initiative. Learn more at http://www.wakegov.com/budget/bonds/2007/openspace.htm.  Check out TLC friend Sig Hutchinson's letter to the N&O at http://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/letters/story/728732.html.

Raleigh and Wake County residents:  Get out and vote!

2. TLC Fall Outings offer walks in the moonlight and back in time
Do you get goosebumps when you hear the call "who-cooks-for you?"  Are you fascinated by Pleistocene refugia?  Ever wonder what "pig iron" is?  If so, then you should sign up for the last hurrah of TLC's fall outings:  a moonlight walk at Johnston Mill, a stroll through the ancient beech forest on Swift Creek Bluffs and a meander to Endor Iron Furnace on the Deep River.  To learn more and register, click here.

3. Heritage Society Member Profile:  Dr. Bill Burlingame
Bill Burlingame’s unique homeplace at the base of Pickards Mountain between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough is perfectly suited to this history buff and outdoor enthusiast. The house was created by joining three log cabins and sits on a slope near a sprawling ancient oak. The remnants of Pickard's Mill on Morgan Creek, including a stone dam, headrace and tailrace, can still be seen on the property and neighboring land. Bill has generously donated a conservation easement to TLC and is also a member of TLC's Heritage Society, which honors people who have included TLC in their estate plans.  Read more about Bill by clicking here

4. October Members of the Month:  Andrea Reusing and Mac McCaughan

New TLC members Andrea Reusing and Mac McCaughan are using their creative talents to enrich the living experience in the Triangle. Andrea is chef and owner of Lantern in Chapel Hill, which was named one of America’s Top 50 Restaurants by Gourmet in 2006. Mac co-owns Merge Records and is a member of two bands, Superchunk and Portastatic.  Read more about the couple by clicking here.

5. Kumbaya anyone? It's time for Campout! Carolina

OK, we promise we won't make you sing if you don't want to.  But if you like to camp and want to help support the environment by roughing it for a night, you should participate in Campout! Carolina, being organized by Earth Share of North Carolina (ESNC).

Details:
Who: Individuals, families, friends, neighbors, community groups
What: North Carolina’s 1st Annual Statewide Campout
When: October 19, 2007
Where: Backyards, state parks... anywhere you can pitch a tent
Why: ESNC is encouraging families and friends to show their support for North Carolina’s environment by pitching tents in their backyards and camping out the night of October 19th.
Be sure to register at www.campoutcarolina.org so ESNC can demonstrate how many people participated in support of NC’s environment.

6. TLC Nature Quiz

Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's Nature Quiz.  As you devoted readers will recall, the quiz consisted of a limerick missing the last critical word.  Here's the answer:

While floating by the Deep River Diner,

Where the food could really not be finer,

A paddler spied a minnow

Much smaller than his big toe,

And said: "By gum, it's a Cape Fear shiner!"

This month, we're going to try something a little different.  It's just a simple question that refers to Endor Iron Furnace, site of one of our Fall Outings mentioned above.  The first person to send the correct answer to ida@tlc-nc.org wins a fetching TLC baseball cap.  Ready?

Here's the question:  What is pig iron?
