1. TLC Tops 10,000 Acres with Year-End Project Closings
As TLC prepares to celebrate its 25-year anniversary in 2008, several year-end projects brought the organization to a major milestone: 10,000 acres of land protected since 1983. TLC reached this landmark by significantly increasing its pace of conservation. By the year 2000, TLC had conserved 2,000 acres in 17 years. In the last seven years, the group has conserved 8,000 acres to reach the 10,000-acre mark. Much of TLC’s success over the last seven years can be attributed to increased funding opportunities through North Carolina’s conservation trust funds: the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, the Natural Heritage Trust Fund and the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. Click on the headlines below to read about three of the year-end project closings:
* TLC Acquires Conservation Land along Rocky River in White Pines Region
* Conservation Partnership on Pickard's Mountain Grows
* TLC and Bryan Properties Conserve 299 more acres in northern Durham County

3. TLC's 25th Anniversary Gala - Friday, February 29, 2008
Jonas looked out the window and stared at the gnarled oak trees in the yard. Brown shriveled leaves shivered in the weak mid-winter breeze. "The winter sure does drag on," Jonas thought. "Seems like just yesterday I was picking those nice ripe tomaters off the vine." He opened the front door and shuffled onto the porch, carefully stepping over Miss Lula, his beloved hound dog, who was sprawled on the porch floor like a lumpy burlap sack. "Guess I'll go check the mail," Jonas said to the snoring hound as he ambled down the driveway. Somewhere in the back of his mind he heard a crow squawking overhead. Another sound suddenly took shape and formed into the unmistakable sound of hoof beats. A familiar dust cloud appeared down the road. It was Clem the Courier. "Jonas!" he bellowed as he jumped off his horse, Maybelle. "Look what I got for ya! It's an invite to some kind of thing called a Gala! Open it up!" Jonas took the envelope from Clem's grimy hand and looked at it. It had been opened, but carefully taped shut with duct tape. Clem was not exactly up-to-speed on postal regulations. Jonas opened the invitation. "Hmm . . . now this looks like fun," he said to Clem. "Maybe this here Gala will cure me of the winter doldrums . . . "
Curious? Visit the TLC website to learn more about this upcoming event. Invitations will be mailed to TLC members and friends in the near future and tickets will also be available for purchase on the TLC website (www.triangleland.org). Stay tuned for more details!

5. Help build a trail at Johnston Mill Nature Preserve
Holiday stuffing still sticking to your gills? Here's a great way to work off a few of Aunt Martha's ham biscuits: help build a new trail at Johnston Mill Nature Preserve in Chapel Hill. Click here to get all the details about these upcoming volunteer workdays.
6. TLC Friends honored as Tar Heel of the Year and Tar Heel of the Week
The News & Observer recently honored two TLC friends and supporters: Chris Mumma, a member of TLC's Board of Directors, was named Tar Heel of the Year for 2007. Bob Nutter, who owns Maple View Farm and has donated conservation easements to TLC, was honored as Tar Heel of the Week on January 6, 2008. Congratulations to both of them for this well-deserved recognition. Click the links below to read the full stories:

7. Nature Quiz
Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's Nature Quiz. In case you have forgotten the quiz, here's the nature limerick with the missing word:
Conservationists quiver in their socks
When that old opportunity knocks.
So it was in '84,
In TLC's days of yore,
When we received the donation of The R-O-C-K-S.

We're sad to report that due to the ongoing Limericist strike, we are unable to offer you a fresh limerick this month. But we still have the Nature Quiz! This month's quiz answer refers to a preserve that is mentioned in the above-mentioned news briefs (if you read the full articles on the website). So, you know the rules. The first person to email ida@tlc-nc.org with the correct answer wins one of those coveted breathable cotton TLC baseball caps. OK, here goes: What is the name of TLC's largest owned property?
