1. Local Partnership Protects Swift Creek Property in Cary

TLC’s partnership with local governments could result in an exciting addition to TLC’s 23-acre Swift Creek Bluffs Preserve in Cary.  In 2007, the City of Raleigh, Wake County and the Town of Cary approached TLC about joining them to purchase 38 acres that could be used to develop a greenway connection on Swift Creek between Holly Springs Road and Lake Wheeler.  Click here to read more.

2. TLC's 25th Anniversary Gala - Friday, February 29, 2008

We have been overwhelmed by our members' and friends' positive response to the 25th Anniversary Gala!  Tickets sold out within days of mailing invitations.  We sincerely apologize to those who have been unable to get tickets.  We are exploring ways to make more tickets available, and have started a wait list in the event we can release more tickets for sale.  Please call Aime Mitchell at 919-833-3662 x116 if you would like to be placed on the wait list for tickets.  Tickets cost $100/person.

3. Calling All Artists: Ride for the Land 2008 T-shirt Design Contest

On July 19, TLC will host its 3rd annual bike tour, Ride for the Land. The tour will bring attention to TLC's Little River Priority Area and raise awareness of our efforts to preserve this critical piece of our natural heritage.  This year we are also asking our artistic friends to participate in a T-shirt design contest for the Ride.  Click here to learn more.

4.  2008 TLC Outings Update

Have your hiking boots become a breeding ground for dust bunnies?  If so, it's time to shake them out and hit the trail.  TLC is offering new, improving outings and open houses throughout 2008 as part of the 25 Year Anniversary.  Your next chance: Join us for the Mark's Creek "Step Back in Time" Tour on February 23.  Click here to read the latest schedule.

5.  Volunteers Wanted for April Outing

We're very excited about our 25th Anniversary Outing for April -- an Open Garden Tour in Raleigh on Saturday April 12. Thanks to the efforts of Amy Mackintosh on behalf of the NC Native Plant Society-Reid Chapter and Reid Garden Friends, which are co-hosting the event, five private Raleigh gardens will be open to the public from 1 to 4 pm. Volunteers will be needed to help welcome visitors at each garden. Please contact Amy Mackintosh (trkagan@aol.com) to volunteer.

6.  A Southern Season Goes Green on St. Patrick’s Day

Mark your calendars and start making your shopping lists now:  A Southern Season is benefiting TLC with a day-long fundraiser on St. Patrick’s Day, Monday, March 17.  That day, 5% of retail sales in the store and the Weathervane Cafe will go directly to TLC’s efforts to protect critical open space in the Triangle.  Along with a percentage of sales, A Southern Season is also giving TLC day-long access to their Clock Tower Stage, just inside the front entrance of the store, where staff and volunteers will provide information about TLC.  Of course, this great opportunity means we need YOUR help!  Here’s how you can support TLC’s 5% Day:

A Southern Season is located on S. Estes Drive in University Mall in Chapel Hill, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on March 17th.  For more information about the store, visit www.southernseason.com or call 919-929-7133.

7.  February Member of the Month:  Pearson Stewart

For many people, Pearson Stewart’s name is synonymous with Triangle Land Conservancy.  And that association is a powerful endorsement for potential TLC supporters.  “So many of the Triangle’s leaders over the years have said to me:  If Pearson is part of Triangle Land Conservancy, then it must be a very good organization,” says Kevin Brice, President & CEO of TLC.  Read more about Pearson by clicking here

8.  Help build a trail at Johnston Mill Nature Preserve

Bored?  Restless?  Edgy?  If you're looking for a "natural cure" for your modern age maladies, how about taking in some restorative fresh air while helping complete a new trail at Johnston Mill Nature Preserve in Chapel Hill?  Click here to get all the details about these upcoming volunteer workdays.

9.  Saving Magic Places

Emily Weinstein's book, Saving Magic Places, chronicles the three-year effort to stop a development and create a regional public park on New Hope Creek. Along with the history are 100 color plates of Weinstein's paintings of the area and key people in the fight, including TLC's Kevin Brice.  The reference pages provide contacts to help you with your quest to save land. Saving Magic Places makes a beautiful gift and is a must have for all nature lovers. By purchasing this book through TLC you can help us save more magical places. Go to www.weinsteinart.com/magicplaces.html for details.  Please note that the book cannot be purchased online:  to purchase, please contact Emily through the contact information on the website.  The book costs $30.26 ($23.50 book + $1.76 NC 7.5% sales tax + $5.00 S/H).  If you write TLC-40% in the memo line of your check, Emily will donate $10 from the book sale to TLC.

10.  TLC Awareness Campaign Underway

What do public service announcements on WRAL television, a billboard on I-40 in Raleigh and sponsor announcements on WUNC radio have in common? In the past month, they have all been promoting the work of your local land trust! And except for the sponsor announcements on WUNC, they've all been free.

To join in the celebration of our 25th Anniversary, Capitol Broadcasting Company and Fairway Outdoor Advertising have generously offered their pro bono services. From Capitol Broadcasting, those services include creating a video presentation that will premier at the 25th Anniversary Gala on February 29, an on-air psa, and banner ads on WRAL.com (coming Feb. 15). From Fairway Outdoor, those services include the design, production and placement of a billboard ad. We are grateful to both of these companies for their assistance in spreading the message about our work. For TLC to continue to make an impact in quality of life of the Triangle, we must broaden the circle of people who know about and support our work.

We have also increased our sponsorship frequency on WUNC of late, with some sponsorship messages mentioning partnerships with the John R. McAdams Company, Progress Energy, and Walmart. TLC relies on these announcements to spread the word about TLC and to recognize our corporate donors; their donations support TLC in doing the important work of conserving land in this rapidly growing region.

We hope you're seeing and hearing our messages -- and telling your friends about them, too!

11. Nature Quiz

Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's Nature Quiz.  In case you have forgotten the quiz, the question was:   What is the name of TLC's largest owned property?  The correct answer is:  Horton Grove Preserve, in northern Durham County, at 708 acres.

We are happy to report that TLC was able to settle with the striking Limericists and have a fresh limerick for you to enjoy!  All you have to do is figure out the missing last word, which rhymes with the last word in the first and second lines.  The first person to email ida@tlc-nc.org with the correct answer wins a cool, and functional, TLC baseball cap.  Here's a clue:  The missing word refers to a TLC project featured in an upcoming field trip.  OK, here goes:

Far east from the snows of Pike's Peak,
Lies a treasure the brash and the brave seek.
"Find the geocache," they're told,
"Who knows - you might find gold!"
During the Step Back in Time Tour at ____ _____.
