April 7, 2008

Dear TLC Members and Friends,
Pollen is settling, grass is growing, and the trout lilies have already said farewell. The signs of spring are equally evident at TLC headquarters, as we shake off winter and welcome this lush, beautiful season. One of those signs reads, "Earth Month" and all that entails to a conservation non-profit. Read on to find out how you can join with us and help us celebrate Earth Month and more.

PS: A Southern Season in Chapel Hill kicked off our spring season a tad early, with a 5% of sales fundraiser on March 17. Thanks to all who shopped that day and helped A Southern Season raise $2,500 for TLC!

1. April Outing: Raleigh Conservation Gardens Tour: Saturday April 12, 1 to 4 p.m.

A real departure from the ordinary TLC outing, this 25th Anniversary special event opens the figurative gates to five of Raleigh's most unique private gardens. Included are two places TLC has helped protect with conservation easements: Margaret Reid Wild Flower Garden and Joslin Garden. The tour celebrates how private gardens and residential properties contribute to the health and beauty of the Triangle’s environment.

Many thanks to Amy Mackintosh and the Reid Chapter of the NC Native Plant Society, our-co-sponsor of this tour.

Click here for details about the gardens on the tour and tour maps are available online.

PS: A few volunteers are wanted to help greet garden visitors. Please contact Amy Mackintosh at 781-6067 or trkagan@aol.com for details.

PPS: On May 3, join us for the traditional Flower Hill Rhodo Ramble outing! Details and registration coming soon.

2. Help Build Trails and Bridges at Johnston Mill workdays (4/9, 4/17, 4/23)

A fabulous new trail at Johnston Mill is opening up southern and western areas of the preserve. Work continues, with help needed for trail-grading and bridge-building. Three workdays are scheduled in April: Wednesday the 9th, Thursday the 17th, and Wednesday the 23rd. All start at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Click here for more info and to sign-up.

3. VOLUNTEERS needed for Earth Month outreach at Aveda, IBM, and Planet Earth Celebration

So many exciting events lined up this spring, and we need YOU to make them all happen!  We are recruiting volunteers for three events described below.  If you would like to volunteer for any (or ALL!) of these events, please contact Marisa Bryant at mbryant@tlc-nc.org or 919-833-3662 (ext. 111).

Saturday, April 12 Aveda Institute Bake Sale

Students at the Aveda Institute on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill will be offering stress-relieving treatments and selling baked goods on the sidewalk in front of the Institute (200 W. Franklin St.)  All proceeds go to TLC. Two or three volunteers are needed both to prepare baked goods and to staff a TLC information table from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesday, April 15 Aveda Institute Earth Jam

The culmination of Aveda Institute's Earth Month activities is Earth Jam 2008 on Tuesday, April 15, at the Institute on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. This exciting event features a fashion show, an art auction, a silent auction, and raffle. All proceeds go to TLC. Donations of art for the art auction would be greatly appreciated!  Items (gift certificates, wine, etc.) for the general silent auction and raffle are also needed.

Saturday, April 19 Planet Earth Celebration in Raleigh

Burt’s Bees is presenting this “fun-filled, interactive experience that will bring together our community to celebrate our planet while learning practical ways individuals can help make our local and global environment healthy.” This green festival will take place on the grounds of the Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh. Volunteers are needed to staff a TLC information table in 2-hour shifts from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Wednesday, April 23 IBM Employee Earth Week Fair

One or two volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. to staff a TLC information and membership table at this event to introduce IBM employees to TLC. Lunch is provided.

4. Land Trust Day, Saturday, June 7

It's never too early to plan for Land Trust Day!  We'll need about 20 volunteers to staff TLC information and membership tables from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the four Great Outdoor Provision Company stores in the Triangle. If you want to plug into Land Trust Day sooner, we also are looking for volunteers to help recruit new businesses to participate in Land Trust Day. To volunteer, contact Marisa Bryant at mbryant@tlc-nc.org or 919-833-3662 (ext. 111).

What's Land Trust Day? On the first Saturday of June, businesses across the state show their support for their local land trusts by donating a percentage of their sales, supporting membership drives, or by making donations. Great Outdoor Provision Company, a Raleigh-based outdoor gear retailer, began Land Trust Day in 1992 as a way of giving back to groups that are protecting the great outdoors of North Carolina. Learn more at www.landtrustday.com.

5. Chuck Neely on UNC-TV's North Carolina People: April 11 & 13

TLC Board Chair Chuck Neely talks TLC with the venerable Dr. William Friday on UNC-TV's North Carolina People. Chuck's interview airs this Friday, April 11, at 9 p.m., and is re-broadcast on Sunday, April 13, at 5:30 p.m.

6. April Member of the Month – Jon Stucky

Jon Stucky (pronounced like 'cookie') has a passion for being out in nature, walking our gentle Piedmont trails, and really knowing what he’s seeing in the woods. “Not only have I built my career around plants, they’re my hobby too,” he said. “When I recognize a plant and know its name, I start to discern patterns in the landscape that I wouldn’t otherwise discern.”

Learn more about Jon and listen to our podcast interview (available April 11) on our Member Spotlight page.

7. TLC's "Green Legacy" video now on YouTube

If you were among the folks who attended our 25th Anniversary Gala, you witnessed the premier of our video, "Creating a Green Legacy in the Triangle." For those who didn't, now you can see it, too! The WRAL-produced video features interviews with TLC members and staff, footage from TLC preserves, and presents TLC's vision to conserve 45,000 acres in the next 20 years. Check it out on our YouTube site: www.youtube.com/user/triangleland.

8. Green Jamboree on for June 21

Save the Date! TLC's Green Jamboree 2008 is set for Saturday, June 21, 3–7 p.m.

Didn’t make it to TLC’s 25th Anniversary Gala?  Here’s your chance to celebrate TLC’s 25th Anniversary, no tux necessary. Join your fellow TLC members at the Irvin Farm (Jones Ferry Road, Chapel Hill), a 269-acre mix of farmland and forest, donated to TLC by the late Elinor & J. Logan Irvin.  Enjoy food, music, guided hikes, catch-and-release fishing, and lawn games! Invitation and more details coming next month.
