1. Fresh Dirt from the Press Room: TLC Closes on 86-acre Williams
Tract in Chatham County
The smell of fresh ink and stale
coffee. The feverish pecking of typewriters and rustling of food wrappers.
Furrowed brows and anxious glances at the clock. Yes, the TLC Press Room
is humming with activity. So what's the latest dirt? In late May,
Triangle Land Conservancy purchased an 86-acre tract on River Forks Road in
Chatham County south of Pittsboro. The property is located approximately a
quarter-mile from TLC’s flagship preserve, White Pines, and contains the
headwaters of a tributary of the Deep River, one of TLC's priority areas.
Visit TLC's
Press Room
to read more about this recent acquisition and other current news. No
press pass required.
2. 2007 Land Trust Day a Huge Success
This year's Land Trust Day was a smashing success, thanks to the hard work and dedication of participating businesses, TLC volunteers and generous shoppers. We're excited to announce that 32 new members joined TLC on Land Trust Day, making $1,786 in donations at membership drives at four Triangle-area Great Outdoor Provision Company Stores. Read more about the successful event on the website.
3. Ride for the Land on July 21st
If you have a passion for pedaling through landscapes that offer more cows
and cornfields than people and poodles, then you should cycle over to TLC's
Ride for the Land. This year's event will be held on Saturday, July
21, and will take bikers on a scenic route through the heart of the Deep
River region, one of TLC's priority areas. Ride for the Land will once again
be a training ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s annual MS
150 Tour. Visit the
website for more info. Note: We have no problem with
poodles, mind you. It's just that cows don't bark.

Job Openings

Haw River Flatwater Paddle
Saturday, September 29
In 2006, land on both sides of the Haw River upstream of the dam at
Highway 15-501 in Bynum was added to the Haw Slopes State Natural Area
because of its ecological significance. The diverse habitats along this
stretch of the river include rich forested slopes, islands, rock outcrops
and wetlands. Great blue heron, belted kingfisher, red-tailed hawk and
songbirds are commonly seen while paddling. The flatwater upstream of
the dam is well suited for both beginning paddlers and anyone interested in
nature. Parents, paddling with children, find the experience particularly
gratifying.

6. Name that Bird - Win a TLC Cap!
If you take an early morning stroll in one of TLC's woodland preserves this
time of year, such as Johnston Mill or White Pines, you might hear the
exuberant call of a migratory songbird that is named for the type of nest it
builds. The first person to email
ida@tlc-nc.org and correctly identify the bird species will win a TLC
baseball cap and our eternal admiration.
