TLC Calls for Conservation of Dorothea Dix CampusNorth Carolina has treated people with mental illness at Raleigh’s Dorothea Dix Hospital for more than 150 years, but this will change in 2008 when the hospital moves its operations to newer facilities in Butner. The move was announced three years ago, and debate over the fate of the hospital campus' 306 acres has raged ever since. Earlier in 2006, TLC Executive Director Kevin Brice gathered with other conservationists and historic preservationists to develop a set of recommendations for the NC General Assembly’s Dorothea Dix Hospital Property Study Commission. In April, TLC and other groups presented to the commission recommendations calling for protection of the campus' existing open space (about 220 acres) and rehabilitation of the historic buildings, particularly the Main Building (designed by A.J. Davis, who also designed the North Carolina State Capitol). The debate goes on, and TLC will continue to be a strong advocate for conservation of what could become Raleigh's Central Park.
