Bicycle Tour Adds to Land Trust Day Interest

| By foot, by wheel, by water, by work or by shopping, Land Trust Day on
June 3 offered myriad ways for TLC friends to support our work to protect
the most important natural areas of the Triangle region. For the 15th year, Great Outdoor Provision Company led local businesses in supporting TLC, this year with a donation of 10 percent of all sales. |

Wild Bird Center of Chapel Hill joined in at 10% for the second straight year. Newcomers from Ninth Street in Durham Cozy and Vaguely Reminiscent each donated 15% of sales from June 3. And Restaurant Starlu in Durham donated a portion of sales of several wine varieties throughout June and 15% of all sales on June 6.
TLC took Land Trust Day 2006 beyond the shopping centers with activities ranging from a nature walk at Johnston Mill Nature Preserve to a trail-building workday at White Pines, from a canoe trip on the Neuse River to our first-ever bicycle tour of the Mark's Creek area.
The bicycle tour, Ride for the Land, provided the most impact. Ninety-two cycling pioneers braved a rainy morning to be the first to participate in this new bicycle tour. Ride for the Land is geared to bring attention to the need for saving farms and forests, and to creating connections with cyclists who love riding the open spaces outside our towns and cities.
The success of this inaugural event bodes well for future growth. Support from the business community (sponsorships by North State Bank, REI, Whole Foods Market of Raleigh, Baja Burrito and Balanced Physical Therapy/Balanced Movement Studio) was strong, as was the backing by many local bike shops.
