The Rocks: TLC's Second Acquisition
By Becky Bumgardner
In November of 1984, TLC received its second piece of property. The property,
traditionally known as The Rocks, is a ten-acre tract in eastern Wake County, near the
Lizard Lick community. It was acquired by a fee simple donation to the Triangle Land
Conservancy by the Procter family of Raleigh.
Most of the property is made up of stonecrops, sandworts, mosses, saxifrage, and
lichens. Also to be seen in the area are red cedars, winged elms, yucca and prickly pear.
A small stream runs through the area. The Rocks offers the easternmost occurrence of flat,
ground-level granite outcroppings in the Piedmont.
Because of its easy access from a state highway, The Rocks can be used as an
interpretative area for schools.
