25th Anniversary Gala
Friday, February 29, 2008
A festive, lively crowd of 300+ TLC supporters and members celebrated in style at TLC's 25th Anniversary Gala on February 29. The Gala was by far the most successful TLC event of all time in terms of both attendance and fundraising. Forty-two businesses and families sponsored the Gala, helping to raise $35,000. See photos from the Gala and peruse the sponsor list.

25th Anniversary Outings

TLC is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a series of special monthly outings throughout 2008, bigger and better than our regular fall and spring outings. We hope you can join us for one or more of these events, and help us celebrate Saving the places you love for 25 years.

Neuse River Paddles

That's right, paddles with an 's.' Not one but TWO opportunities to ply and play in the waters of the Neuse in Wake County. In the morning, Joe Jacob of the Haw River Canoe & Kayak Company will lead a 3.5 mile jaunt from Milburnie Dam to Poole Road—a three-hour tour, if you will. In the afternoon, Banks Dixon of Frog Hollow Outdoor will add about 2.5 miles to that trip, running from Milburnie Dam to Auburn-Knightdale Road.

Deep River—The Coal Valley Paddle

As Gomer Pyle said, "Surprise, surprise, surprise!" Those who think of Chatham County only as an agricultural Eden may be shocked to learn that here in the heart of North Carolina the hopes and dreams (and schemes) of 19th century industrialists played out. Played out, literally, when the iron ore veins at Buckhorn withered. Yes, it may be hard to believe but at one time in the mid-1800s Pittsboro was on its way to being the Pittsburgh of the South.

We'll paddle the flat waters of the Deep from Deep River Park to 15-501, along the way hearing the fascinating stories of coal mines (and coal mine disasters), iron smelting, and the decades long attempt to turn the Deep into a watery super highway. Along the way we'll stop for a lunch and look and learn visit to the Endor Iron Furnace.
