Adds 17 Acres at White Pines
The addition of the Newton Tract to TLC's White Pines Nature Preserve
should be some comfort, physically and psychologically. With the closing,
TLC is incorporating a much-coveted 17-acre tract into the now 275-acre

Hope Diamond of Open Space...
...and the Heroes Who Are Helping to Preserve It
Sig Hutchinson is a master at illustrating the value of open space for
Wake County residents. Hutchinson cuts up dollar bills and puts the pieces
into his open space machine, a silver canister with a screw-on lid. After
giving it a shake, he pours out red and green baubles to symbolize the
gems of land we can protect if we invest our money now. [May

Thinning Trees at White Pines
Since the mid-1980s the only chainsaw buzzing heard at White Pines was
in 1996 when volunteers came to clear the trails after Hurricane Fran.
Now the chainsaws are back, and this time not just for a clean up. [October

Haw Slopes to Remain a Natural Treasure
Another legacy of the Kate Dixon era at TLC quietly entered the record
book in December 2003 when the State Property Office announced succinctly
by email, "...the Duke property (Haw Slopes State Natural Area) has closed."

Land
Trust Day 2004
Led by Great Outdoor Provision Company, businesses across the Triangle
supported your local land trust through Land Trust Day on June 4-5. GOPC
donated 25% of all sales at its three Triangle-area stores on June 5.
Baja Burrito in Raleigh also donated 25% of sales on June 5, while Durham's
Ninth Street Bakery donated 10% of sales on Friday, June 4. And in Carrboro,
Cat's Cradle on June 5 hosted Land Stand, a benefit concert for TLC featuring
local bands Sorry About Dresden, The Kingsbury Manx, Fake Swedish and
My Dear Ella. All of these activities raised more than $6,000 to support
land protection in our region! [June

Kevin Brice Comes Home to TLC
TLC has turned to its past to look to the future, bringing a rising land
trust movement star back to his conservation birthplace. The TLC Board
in December 2003 hired Kevin Brice as the new executive director. Kevin
begins work on January 21, 2004. [January

Board Members and Officers Elected by Membership
At TLC's 2004 Open House & Membership Gathering on October 21, the TLC
membership strongly supported the slate of nominees for board membership
and for board officers. Elected to their second 3-year terms as board
members were Paul Barringer, Ayden Lee, John McAdams, Chuck Neely
and Bud Taylor. Elected to serve as officers for 2004-05 were John
McAdams, President; Chuck Neely, Vice President; Vicky Will,
Treasurer; and Trip Van Noppen, Secretary. [November

Book Explores Piedmont's Wonders
