Heritage Society Member Profile:  Bill Burlingame

Bill Burlingame’s unique homeplace at the base of Pickards Mountain between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough is perfectly suited to this history buff and outdoor enthusiast.  The house was created by joining three log cabins and sits on a slope near a sprawling ancient oak.  The slope runs down to Morgan Creek and the site of the historic Pickard’s Mill.  Read more.

Chatham Conservation Partnership Springs to Life

On October 4, a group of 45 people breathed life into the idea of protecting Chatham County’s natural resources. TLC is among the organizations that signed a memorandum of understanding that officially launched the Chatham Conservation Partnership. The Partnership’s mission is to create a community conservation vision that builds awareness, protection and stewardship of the county's natural resources.  Read more.

Conservation Makes Waves on the Deep River

TLC continues its ongoing partnership with the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation to protect conservation lands along the nationally significant Deep River.  In July, the State purchased the 75-acre Powell tract on Water Tower Road in Chatham County for $549,300. The property is adjacent to 870 previously conserved acres known as the Justice Lands, bringing this conservation assemblage to a total of 945 acres.  Together, this land could form the first node for the Deep River State Trail, a newly authorized state parks unit. Three TLC Preserves on NC Birding Trail

The North Carolina Birding Trail is a cooperative effort to create a network of birding sites around the state that are bird and birder-friendly.  Three TLC preserves — Johnston Mill Nature Preserve, White Pines Preserve and Swift Creek Bluffs — were nominated and chosen to be included among the more than 100 Piedmont sites.  Read more.

Landowners Help Save Diverse Landscapes

Generous landowners around the Triangle region helped protect several unique pieces of the Triangle landscape in early 2007.  Their commitment to conservation helped protect a rare slice of Orange County's rural heritage, a critical piece of the New Hope Creek conservation corridor, and an addition to a conservation corridor in the Mark's Creek project area.  Read more.

Record-Breaking 17 Deals Highlight 2006

In 2006 TLC completed a record-breaking 17 conservation projects, protecting 1,461 acres and bringing the total acreage protected by TLC at the end of 2006 to 9,096.  These recent projects illustrate how creative collaborations can protect areas as varied as riparian corridors, working lands, open space and even school sites.
